Why a Free Tax Assistance Program?

Situation
It is estimated that 15-25% of eligible households do not access either the state or federal earned income tax credit. This amounts to $6-9 million right here in the Southern Tier that the government keeps. The maximum credit for a family with two or more children is more than $6,000.

Targeted Result
Increased disposable income of working families with incomes <$40,000.

Benefits
  • Helps working families increase disposable income by accessing tax credits
  • Free (if the taxpayer uses a paid preparer, the average fee is $200 per return)
  • Volunteers are trained by IRS-approved trainers.
  • Quick: the return is filed electronically, and refunds normally make it back to the client in ten days
  • Sites throughout Chemung and Steuben Counties
Results
In 2007 (for the 2006 tax year), approximately 2,900 returns were completed and nearly $4.8 million was returned to people in our community. When spent locally, our economy also benefits. This brings the four-year program total to about $14,000,000.
  • To host a tax preparation site or to volunteer, call 936-3753
Training is provided. Must be 17 or older.
CA$H is brought to you by a coalition of nonprofits led by United Way of the Southern Tier.
