What is the Errol Shand Award?
- The Errol Shand Award for exemplary service publicly recognizes an outstanding individual who has provided a lifetime of community service through volunteerism.
- The area that makes up Chemung and Steuben counties is truly a caring community. One of the measures of that caring is the people who volunteer themselves and their time to help the community in some way. Among the many volunteers are those who shine - people who literally stand out because of the depth and breadth of their commitment, their effectiveness and experience, and/or their consistent service over the years.
- The Errol Shand Award of Volunteer Service was created to publicly recognize those outstanding volunteers who have served or are serving the Chemung and Steuben communities.
- The award is named for a former Corning Glass Works engineer who left a bequest to the United Way in his will. By action of the United Way Board of Directors, the funds were invested to provide annually for this award recognizing Mr. Shand and volunteers like him, and to encourage volunteer service.
- The award has been presented annually since 1975.
