Chemung Canal Leader Earns United Way Shand Award
Sarah GrossmanApril 30, 2008

CORNING, NY, April 30, 2008 – The Errol Shand Award for Volunteer Service was presented to Jan P. Updegraff, former president and CEO of Chemung Canal Trust Company and Chemung Financial Corporation, Wednesday evening at the United Way of the Southern Tier Annual dinner.

During the event, held at the Radisson Hotel Corning, he received a Steuben bowl with engraved base for his dedicated service.

The Shand Award recognizes an individual who demonstrates a lifetime of exemplary volunteer service in Chemung and/or Steuben Counties.  Updegraff received this distinction for his devotion to the community and for his role as a respected business leader. During his tenure at Chemung Canal, the bank became a model of corporate citizenship and has been one of Chemung County Chamber of Commerce’s largest investors of both financial and personal resources. He continues to influence the institution and currently serves as director of the board.

In addition to his long term support of the United Way of the Southern Tier, the Elmira native has devoted his time growing the economic health of the region and serves on the board of directors for Southern Tier Economic Growth, Inc.  and Chemung County Chamber of Commerce. He also directs his efforts towards bettering the health of Southern Tier residents and providing cultural outlets for them to enjoy. He serves on the board for the Arnot Ogden Medical Center and has helped raise money for the Arnot Art Museum and the restoration of the Eldridge Park Carousel.

“I have served with Jan on several boards and have had ample opportunity to observe first-hand his dedication and enthusiasm, encouraging participation, leading fund drives, and showing wise counsel,” Dr. Thomas Meier, president of Elmira College, said during the event. “The prestigious Shand Award was created to honor the spirit and dedication of Jan Updegraff.”
