September 10, 2009 – United Way of the Southern Tier launched its 2009 community campaign Thursday during the organization’s annual kickoff event at Wings of Eagles Discovery Center.
Ron Hatch, United Way President, recognized the difficulties ahead for many people in the Southern Tier who have been affected by the downturn in the economy. In order to support the community, United Way plans to raise $4.5 million that will go towards helping youth succeed; families grow stronger, healthier and more financially secure; and people stay safely in their homes for as long as possible.
“While we clearly recognize that the downturn in the economy creates a difficult fundraising environment and a material increase in our neighbor’s needs, “Hatch said. “However, we will continue to focus on our Mission to help people improve their lives and we will strive to generate the maximum amount of support to create positive impact. People get help because community members care enough to provide financial support, lend their voices and give their time and talent. When we reach out a hand to one, we can influence the condition of all.”
About 96 area companies and agencies held early fundraisers during the month of August have gotten United Way off to a good start. Pacesetter companies serve as models for hundreds of local companies that join the community-wide fundraising effort each year.
During the event, local teens and actors performed as United Way Board Chair Peter Wallin recounted some of the successes of United Way’s initiatives within Chemung and Steuben counties. Wallin is CEO of Wallin Insurance Agency.
“Today , we have a few stories based on real people who were able to improve their lives as a result of United Way mobilizing the caring power of this community and through the work of our partner agencies,” Wallin said. “Each and every success story improves the quality of life for us all.”
The following volunteer campaign leaders have worked diligently with their committees to prepare for the annual fund-raising campaign.
