CORNING – United Way of the Southern Tier will honor four individuals and an organization at its annual dinner May 21 at the Corning Museum of Glass.

Peigi Cook, executive director of the Corning Children’s Center, will receive the James B. Flaws Lasting Legacy Award for her demonstration of the full embodiment of United Way’s call to action through giving, advocating and volunteerism. The James B. Flaws Lasting Legacy Award is the highest honor presented by United Way of the Southern Tier to an individual or organization. Cook, who has been executive director of the Corning Children’s Center for 25 years, will retire at the end of June.  

Also at the dinner, United Way of the Southern Tier will present its Give Advocate Volunteer Awards to the following:

Give Award: Penny and Kirk Gregg 

Advocate Award: Food Bank of the Southern Tier 

Volunteer Award: Jon Hartman 

Penny and Kirk Gregg of Corning are being recognized for their leadership and generosity to support the mission of the United Way of the Southern Tier. Penny Gregg was co-founder of the Fund for Women of the Southern Tier Inc., where she is an active board member. Kirk Gregg retired in 2016 from Corning Incorporated where he served as executive vice president and chief administrative officer. 

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier will be honored for bringing together community members to focus on the issue of hunger and make a difference for those in need. The Food Bank serves six counties, distributing food through partner agencies and direct-service programs such as the school BackPack program and Mobile Food Pantry. 

Jon Hartman of Corning serves as a volunteer on United Way of the Southern Tier’s board of directors’ executive committee. He has been instrumental in the formation and leadership of board strategy and in efforts to secure resources to expand United Way’s signature initiative, Southern Tier Kids on Track. Hartman is vice president of North American Operations for Corelle Brands.  

The Annual Dinner, which is sold out, is sponsored by Corning Enterprises, Corning Incorporated Information Technology, Corning Incorporated Pharmaceutical Technologies, and Corning Incorporated Emerging Innovation Groups.
