Steuben County boy overcomes learning delays
This is the actual success story of a Steuben County child who was helped by programs funded with your gifts to United Way of the Southern Tier:
When Sam's mother registered him for pre-school, just shy of his 3rd birthday, it was clear he was not progressing like his peers.
While Sam's parents were both educated and working, they were not aware of how to measure Sam's development. He was not speaking; he was emotionally withdrawn, and he was unable to express his needs.
A program funded by United Way of the Southern Tier quickly met with Mom and Dad to help them understand about Sam's delays. He was referred for speech and occupational therapy to catch up to other children his age.
With this help, Sam was able to start kindergarten on time, with only a slight delay in speech.
United Way of the Southern is dedicated to ensuring all children in Chemung and Steuben counties are reading at grade level by age 8, so they are set up for success in school, work and life. Providing young children with a healthy environment in which to learn and grow is good for their development and their success in school.
