Counseling services help Elmira woman overcome depression

Picture of Sarah

This is the actual success story of an Elmira woman who was helped by programs funded with your gifts to United Way of the Southern Tier:

Sarah was 28 years old and realized she needed counseling after suffering from depression and anxiety most of her life.

As a child, Sarah had been physically and emotionally abused by her father while her mother did nothing. As a teen, Sarah began to struggle with depression. She felt worthless and contemplated suicide.

Sarah’s parents eventually divorced, but the emotional scars from years of abuse remained. Sarah couldn't maintain healthy relationships with others and was afraid to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.

Through a counseling program provided by a United Way of the Southern Tier partner agency, Sarah got the help she needed. She began to understand that her abusive past did not define her future, and she began to rebuild her self-identity. She repaired her relationship with her mother, developed other healthy relationships and even enrolled in a nursing program.

As she achieved her counseling goals, Sarah’s depression and anxiety subsided. Through counseling, Sarah found the courage and motivation she needed to change her story for the better.
