United Way of the Southern Tier offers free tax filing tool

January 27, 2025:

United Way of the Southern Tier is proud to announce the 2025 launch of its affiliation with MyFreeTaxes.com.

United Way provides MyFreeTaxes.com, an online tax filing platform, to help taxpayers easily, quickly and accurately file federal and state tax returns for free.

“Taxes can be a source of confusion and stress for Americans,” said Maleaha Smith, President of United Way of the Southern Tier. “Many of us are intimidated by the complexities of taxes and afraid to make a mistake that will cost money. With MyFreeTaxes, you can take advantage of all the tax credits and deductions for which you qualify.”

MyFreeTaxes is available in English and Spanish. Most filers complete their taxes in under one hour, saving the $200 fee charged by many tax preparers.

For help while using the software, filers can connect with IRS-certified specialists at MyFreeTaxes’ helpline, 866-698-9435.

MyFreeTaxes also has tax guides for small business owners, gig economy workers, owners of home-based child care centers, and filers impacted by federally declared disasters.

Tax situations covered for free in MyFreeTaxes include:
• W-2 income.
• Schedule C Self Employment.
• Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV student.
• Education expenses, credits or student loan interest.
• Unemployment income.
• Claiming the standard deduction.
• Earned Income Tax Credit.
• Child tax credits.
• Free access to a student debt management tool that will help filers easily lower payments or find loan forgiveness.

Chemung and Steuben county residents seeking in-person help with tax filing should call the 2-1-1 Helpline (dial 2-1-1 or 800-346-2211).
